Should I become a gas engineer? Yes, we have 5 good reasons for you.

Five reasons to become a gas engineer

Choosing a career can be puzzling. You need to evaluate the pros and cons of each industry along with your own set of skills and preferences. Whether you’re looking for something for the first time or looking for a change, the decision is always tough as you know it can affect your life in a long-term capacity.

Keep calm. Certain areas in the UK can guarantee you excellent work prospects. Gas Engineering is one of them. There’s a current shortage of ‘Gas Safe’ installers in the UK today, so such skills are in demand both commercially and domestically. Still not enough? Here are some excellent reasons why pursuing a career in the gas industry can be the right thing for you.

1. Competitive Salary

As in most careers, engineer salaries vary depending on your experience level. The Everyman gas fitter could earn up to £30,000 a year, whereas very experienced leading gas engineers can earn up to £50,000 a year. If you run your own business – the situation of many in the gas trade – these figures could significantly increase.

2. It’s a Career

Choosing a career in the gas industry opens you up to a whole range of prospects. It’s a secure profession, and with legal regulations requiring people to hire ‘Gas Safe’ registered engineers to service their boilers, your skills will always be in demand. With time, you will strengthen your skills and will be able to scale to a top position. It can be a career for a lifetime.

3. It’s Challenging

The demand of gas engineer also means that it’s a challenging job, both mentally and physically. The work requires math abilities, manual skills, prolixity, patience and the ability to communicate with your clients.

4. Job Diversity

Gas fitters can be involved in a diverse range of projects, from domestic jobs to huge commercial projects. One day you may be working in a home on a small boiler and another you could be servicing an industrial heating system in a commercial environment.

5. Time flexibility

You won’t be one of those people tied to a schedule, who sit in the same chair in the same office day after day. You will be switching places and attending different kind of appointments. Each day will be distinct from the other, and you will be able to manage your own time.

Get ready in the summer for your winter job

It may not seem like a necessity now that you are enjoying the sun, but you know that “Winter is Coming”, just like in Game of Thrones. When the cold season arrives, people suddenly remember that the heater is not working and gas engineers’ phone won’t stop ringing. That’s why we are warning you in advance: Join our Energy Training now and be ready for numerous job opportunities.

And it’s not just winter. Whether it’s a gas fire or cooker in a home, a heating system in a large office building or even the gas systems for an industrial estate, it all comes under the remit of a Gas Engineer.

What do they do?

Gas Engineers install, service, maintain and repair gas appliances. Typical duties for a Gas Engineer may include:

  • Installing or repairing appliances to deliver gas
  • Maintaining or replacing faulty systems
  • Cutting, bending and joining pipes and fittings
  • Providing cost estimates to customers, and talking through additional cover and insurance options
  • Carrying out tests, checking for gas leaks and ensuring all repairs/installations are up to code
  • Ensuring all safety requirements are met accordingly.

Is it right for me?

Let’s see. First and foremost, you need to be a practical person. It is a skilled trade and you will need technical skills and a strong attention to detail.

This is a very physical profession, so you should also be prepared for a large amount of manual work.

If you are skilled with your hands, if you can concentrate for long periods of time, if you have communication skills to deal with customers and you enjoy to work individually, this is a great career for you.

Tell me the facts

Gas engineers earn a competitive salary that depends on the experience level. A starter could make around £18,000 while a highly experienced one could make around £38,000. You may also be paid bonuses, shift allowances and overtime on top of your basic salary. You’ll usually work 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday in customers’ homes or premises. You may have to work on a rota if your employer offers 24-hour emergency cover.

But first things first. To start a career in this ever-needed area, you need to get qualified. To become a Gas Engineer you need an NVQ level 3 in Gas Installation and be Gas Safe registered.

F2L Energy Training takes place at the Barnet and Southgate College. In our courses, you’ll develop the vital skills and get the qualifications you need to prepare you for a future within the Gas and Energy sector, ensuring you are ready for the world of work and fully qualified along the way.
