With The Prime Minister announcing that he wants to invest more into construction and support young people into this sector. What does this mean in the long term?
The Prime Minister announced on 30th June 2020, that he wanted to invest £5 billion into the construction industry, pledging to build more bridges, railways projects, 29 new road projects, 59 schools and more hospitals. All with the aim to save the jobs of workers who have lost out in the employment market.

A big part of this is directed towards the construction industry and getting more young people into this sector. With plans for more work placements, supporting people in those jobs, apprenticeships and making sure peoples skills are being used. It seems a great time to be looking to get into construction. They have also said that there will be guaranteed traineeships and opportunities for the construction industry. Giving young people the valuable work experience employers look for and to put their skills into action.
But what are Traineeships and how can you be part of one?
A traineeship is a quality work experience placement for anyone aged 16-24. It provides preparation training for the workplace and gives you the added benefits of learning other skills too! They are an opportunity to get real work experience, job skills and learn things that can’t be taught in a classroom. Some programmes can last up to 6 months with content matched to the skills you will need.
What are the Benefits?
There are lots of benefits to doing a traineeship. You are able to get experience in the industry your looking to go in, which you can add to your CV. When you apply for your next role you will already be ahead of others who have not had work experience. You will learn about how businesses run and how the industry operates, which are valuable skills to bring to any company. You will learn extra skills while on the job which will boost your CV and make you ‘work ready’, giving you the confidence and skills to take your first steps to securing employment. You might also get an interview at the end for a role in the company or feedback about your performance you can use as a reference for future jobs.
Will it be right for me?
If you can’t currently get the opportunities to build up your skills and experience, a Traineeship could be perfect for you. It could be a good stepping stone to getting your foot on the career ladder.
You will have to be:
Unemployed or working fewer than 16 Hours per week and have little work experience.
Aged between 16-24 and qualified below Level 3
A Traineeship might not be right for you if you:
Already have the skills and experience
Are over 25 years old
Already employed
Are Traineeships Paid?
Employers may support you with expenses, with travel and lunch. However, there is no requirement for them to pay. You may be able to access financial support depending on your circumstances either from places for example; training providers like Free2Learn or your Job Centre.
